  • What is osteoarthritis?

    Osteoarthritis is one of the most common disease of the elderly population. Osteoarthritis occurs due to progressive damage of the joint surface and soft tissues of the joint. It leads to pain and stiffness of the joint. Most commonly affects knee joint, hip joint, elbow,shoulder, ankle.

  • Why do osteoarthritis occur?

    Osteoarthritis occurs due to production of toxic enzymes in the joint by the joint tissue itself. These toxic enzymes damages the healthy joints and replaces it by unhealthy fibrous tissue. The factors which promote osteoarthritis are many, but notable ones are:-
    Obesity, familial history, previous joint damage, joint fractures, chondrocalcinosis, sports person, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.

  • Is osteoarthritis curable?

    Osteoarthritis is treatable medically at stage 1. In this stage joint damage is not severe, and weight loss, with exercises& medications can reverse osteoarthritis.

    In stage 2 or 3 usually it is not curable and patient may require total joint replacement for painfree joints.

  • When does injection in the joint help?

    In certain cases where patient is not responding to medication, injection of medication directly into the joint alleviates the symptoms. But joint injection are not a permanent solution to painful joints, it gives temporary relief for 1 -2 months.

    started early prevents the deformity of the joints. But if deformity has already occurred, it is very hard to restore the function again in the deformed joint. So drugs should be started early, and continued life long.

  • What are the foods which should not eaten in gout?

    Meat, chicken, egg yolk, alcohol, masur dal, sugary drinks, seafood. Purine rich vegetables such as spinach, palak, pervals, ladysfinger were previously thought to cause uric acid excess. But recent study shows no vegetable causes uric acid excess in body. So a vegetarian diet is good for gouty individual.
